Why indeed, Jack.

So I, like much of the Greater Internet Area, have finished Mass Effect 3. I’ll keep away from spoiling overmuch, but suffice it to say that the ending isn’t everything it could or should be. BioWare is capable of much, much better than this, as evidenced by, well… the preceding 90% of Mass Effect. I was pretty disappointed, and the impression I’ve gotten is that so is most of the Internet. And by “disappointed,” I of course mean “people are losing their god damn minds over this.”

Now, I’ll be the first person to admit that when a piece of fiction I’ve invested five years in comes to a conclusion that has all the narrative satisfaction of a brick in the face, I get upset. What I’m not prone to doing, however, is starting petitions over a bad ending. Or protests over a bad ending. Or filing complaints with the Federal Trade Commission over a bad ending. Or donating tens of thousands of dollars to Child’s Play over a bad ending. (Although, kudos on that one, I guess. Child’s Play is a worthy cause.)

Truth be told, I’m split on this whole situation. On the one hand, I totally get it. I’m annoyed, too. As both a player and as someone who appreciates a good story, I want a more satisfying ending. I want closure. I want catharsis. I want shit to make sense. On the other hand, man, really? Sure, the ending is shit, but it’s their ending to tell. You don’t have to like it, but do you honestly think throwing an Internet tantrum is going to make it all better? All we’ve done is put BioWare into a “damned if you do, damned if you don’t situation.” Either they cave and risk further criticism depending on how they handle the DLC, or they don’t and risk coming off as Just Another Vile Megacorp.

Still, there is one good takeaway from this whole fucking debacle. Turns out people seriously give a shit about the narrative in their video games these days. If that’s not reason to smile, I don’t know what is.
